Project Outline

Kidder Mathews’ Sustainability Practice worked with apartment developer, The Hanover Company, to assist in the LEED certification of the Candlestick Cove apartment building in San Francisco. The project, since renamed Ashton San Francisco, consists of 110 one and two bedroom luxury apartments. Located near Candlestick Park, the old home of the Giants and 49ers, the building includes a fitness center and a clubroom for tenants, as well as complimentary shuttle service to the local public transit stations.

Results

As mentioned above, the project focused on creating a commuter friendly building, offering free shuttle service and also offering discounted parking for hybrid and electric vehicles. Throughout the property, water reduction is a focus as drought tolerant, local plantings help to reduce the need for landscape watering and low flow fixtures are used in the apartments. Another focus within the building is occupant comfort. The HVAC system has increased ventilation rates over comparable buildings and occupants are asked to participate in a survey after move-in to ensure their comfort. Throughout the design and construction process, products such as low VOC paints, carpets and adhesives were chosen to keep harmful chemicals out of the project. Green housekeeping is practiced throughout the building to keep the space as free from chemicals as possible.
