BioMed Realty is accustomed to going big.
Now it is doing so on both sides of San Francisco Bay with iconic projects in two of the hottest biotech hubs in the nation. In South San Francisco, it netted big leases with drug giants Amgen Inc. and AbbVie Inc. at the potential 1.3 million-square-foot Gateway of Pacific project; in Emeryville, it bought the former Chiron Corp. headquarters from Novartis AG, quickly sealed a lease with fast-growing synthetic biology company Zymergen Inc. and put plans in motion for a possible 850,000-square-foot expansion.
